Italy is a magical place that feeds the imagination.  You can feel the history everywhere you go.  It calls to me and I must go!  We just returned from a quick visit to Italy.  My lovely cousins live in the north outside of Torino.  My grandmother was born there and I just love it.  This family is just amazing.  They are wonderful and we are so thankful for their generous hospitality.  And let me just say the dinners were – Mamma Mia! Delicious!  I will have to ask them for permission before I post any family photos. I don’t have photos of the area from this visit.  But I do have some lovely photos of Torino and the surrounding area from my last visit.  I will share those soon.

We left Torino by high speed train and arrived in Florence.  We were meeting the awesome group of students and teachers from Manvel High School.  We were waiting for their bus to arrive and noticed how flooded the Arno river had become.  It is normally not that high.  There had been so much rain in the north that week.  I loved the way the old buildings were reflected in the river.  As soon as the bus unloaded – we were off – armed with our umbrellas and cameras.  The agenda was fast paced – a tour of the points of interest – the Duomo, the Uffizi and more.  I had not visited the Uffizi in many years and it is just as wonderful as I remembered.  Botticelli’s The Birth of Venice and Primavera still take my breath away.  There is so much to see and it cannot be missed when you visit Florence.  We toured other spots of the old city – Ponte Vecchio, Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral (4th biggest church in the world) the Leonardo Da Vinci Museum ,the Galleria dell’Accademia (where you can see Michelangelo’s David) and Santa Croce Basilica.  We also visited a leather factory and of course – we hit the markets and spent many euros!

I have to tell you that for the first time, after exploring the Duomo (Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral), I did something I had not done on my previous visits to Florence.  I climbed the 463 stairs up and down to the top of the dome!  My son really wanted to do it and we thought – why not.  I was not quite prepared for the experience.  You see, what I did not anticipate is the claustrophobic feeling in the “stair passages”.  I felt like I was in a tomb! The stairs were steep and sometimes became a never ending spiral.  I could not go back down – until I went up.  And it went up and up and up!  We saw the paintings on the inside of the dome and continued to climb.  Once we reached the top – the view was amazing.  I really think many of the amazing artists must have seen Florence this way based on the views I have seen in some paintings.  I was still quite panicked from the tiny stairway and I must say I nearly ran down the stairs.  I told my husband and son I would see them at the bottom because I was going to get down as fast as possible.

And one more thing….while we were there Italy was celebrating it’s 150 year anniversary as a country.  All of the cities were decorated with Italian flags and had many events planned for the special day. Click below to see a slide show with a few photos from Florence.

Tiptoe Through the Lily Pads

September 6, 2010

I love three day weekends!  We were sitting at home Saturday around lunch time and suddenly said – “Let’s go camping!”   So we packed up and headed out as soon as possible!  We loaded up our bikes and the dogs and we were off.  Along the way – our bikes came loose and there were a few casualties.  I had no idea that handle bars could be filed down so quickly by concrete and speed.  LOL!!!  We decided to visit Huntsville State Park.  It is north of Houston and an easy short drive.

Sunday morning we rode our beat up bikes to the swimming area.  It is a nice spot – But if you leave that swimming area – beware of alligators.  We only saw a 2 footer – they are more scared of us – right?  We also had a relaxing canoe ride.  Well it was relaxing for me – the guys paddled and I just sat in the middle.  :o )  Here are a few snaps from our trip!

We spent last week enjoying coastal Alabama.  It was a fabulous trip.  We had so much fun and visited many great spots.  This post is dedicated to the gorgeous Bellingrath Gardens in Theodore, Alabama.  It is a 65 acre garden with a lovely historic home.  It was originally built on the site of a fishing camp along the Fowl river and then evolved to be so much more.  The gardens were first shared by the Bellingraths in 1934.    It is open year round and the fabulous flowers change with the seasons.  It is a gorgeous living work of art with so many spots to sit and soak in the beauty.

The heat and humidity was off the charts but we had fun.  I think this is just a beautiful family. Of course I am biased – this is my lovely niece and her husband and son.  Our sweet and precious little boy was not wanting to play our photography games.  He had his own agenda!  We did get a few really cute smiles.  As long as the bubbles were blowing – he was happy.  We are planning another shoot soon with some of my new props.  I can’t wait!

I love Colorado! It is such a wonderful place to visit for family fun. We love to visit my sister in law and her family each Spring Break. And of course we take in the slopes and sites! The day we arrived was horrible. A blizzard almost kept us on the mountain. We could not see a thing and the drive down was treacherous. We made it down and said a prayer of relief. We stayed at Mount Princeton resort with wonderful hot springs pools. Which is a perfect way to end the day after skiing! We also loved to see all the wildlife in the surrounding area – we saw deer, elk, coyotes, big horn sheep, a bald eagle and various birds and small mammals. I need to get a super zoom lens to capture some of these creatures with my camera next time. We had a wonderful trip. Here are a few shots from our adventure.

Spring is in the air….

March 9, 2010

I am so ready for spring to arrive. There are a few hints – here and there – that it is on its way. I found these blooming in my friend’s backyard. She says they are called “paper whites”. I like them. Spring is a time for renewal and rebirth. These clean white flowers remind me of the blooms to come.

Christmas reminds me of many different things.  First and foremost, the birth of Christ.  It reminds me that we are loved unconditionally.  I love all of the Christmas services and of course the Christmas shows. It is such a beautiful time of traditions and family.  I have a tree with ornaments made by my children and other things that catch my eye.  It is not a “decorator” tree with everything matching.  Not saying anything about that – those are beautiful – just not me.   Each year we carefully unwrap delicate ornaments, funny ornaments, Popsicle stick ornaments and of course the very special ones.   I took a few photos of one of my favorites.  A tiny little bird’s nest that has 3 little eggs.  It clips onto the branch like an earring.  I remember when my Mother gave it to me, I had to repair it a bit.  Then is was as good as new.  That little ornament was my Nana’s.  Each year I think about it sitting there on my tree, among the thumbprint star and shiny orbs.  It makes me smile to know a small piece of her is with us each Christmas.

Merry Christmas to all my friends and may the New Year bring you much happiness!
